Bergen Academy of Art was established through the merger of the Vestlandske kunstakademi (West Norway Academy of Arts) and the National Academy of Applied Arts and Crafts on 1st August 1996 following the implementation by the Storting of new legislation to restructure the educational system. The new Academy comprises three departments– the Department of Fine Arts, the Department of Design and the Department of Specialised Arts. Programmes offered by the Department of Fine Arts focus on individual work by the students and seek to encourage the development of individual skills and ambitions from the very start of their studies. The students’ results, arguments and art works are debated by members of the culture, philosophy and other relevant sectors in order to encourage new thinking and development within their art. Programmes offered also prepare students for the process of establishing themselves as artists after graduation. The Department offers 15 student spaces per annum, at undergraduate (three years) and postgraduate (18 months) levels.

The Department of Design offers education in Room Design, which covers a wide spectrum of furniture and equipment in public and private buildings, public streets and squares, exhibitions and conventions; graduates can qualify for the Norwegian Association of Designers of Interior Design and Furniture. Programmes in Visual Communication are also offered, covering the entire gamut of design and illustration within the areas of drawing, printing, photography and electronic media; graduates can qualify for membership in GRAFILL - Norwegian Graphic Designers and Illustrators , the Norwegian Association for Illustrators and Graphic Designers. Annually the Department offers 36 places at under-graduate (24) and postgraduate (12) levels.

By using the term Specialised Art the Department focuses on Photography, Ceramics, Textile and Graphic Art. The first year of study focuses on the basic techniques, materials and theory for the different media. The second and third years are based on more individual work in each area. Annually the Department offers 39 places (26 undergraduate and 13 postgraduate).
