The archive was founded in 1983 as a national collection of books of popular and folk songs, manuscripts, collections of published and unpublished sound recordings, recordings of concerts and popular theatre and various posters. The archive is, together with the Norwegian heritage collection, responsible for a database comprising all Norwegian text and melody scores from the medieval period.
