(Photo: Rune Baashus/Scanfoto)Norway’s leading orchestra was founded in 1919 and is based at the Oslo Concert Hall. The Orchestra tours overseas extensively – past tours have included the UK, Switzerland, Japan, China, Taiwan and South Korea. Recordings include 30 releases on EMI and Chandos in addition to Norwegian labels. In 1998-99 the orchestra released several recordings (R Strauss, Stravinsky, Brahms) on Simax.
Many leading conductors have been Music Directors, such as Issay Dobrowen and Herbert Blomstedt. From 1979, with Mariss Jansons as Music Director, the orchestra developed into an ensemble of high international recognition. André Previn is Music Director since 2002, and will be followed by Jukka-Pekka Saraste from the 2006-7 season.
