Bryggen Museum is based on the findings of the archaeological excavations of Bryggen between 1955 and 1972. This includes parts of some of the oldest buildings in Bergen, dating from the 12th century. There are unearthed ceramics, runic inscriptions and several artefacts illustrating the commerce, shipping, cultural activities, handicrafts and daily life in the Middle Ages. The museum incorporates a temporary exhibition gallery which comprises a large open space on two levels. Below are technical specifications:

Dimensions: 2nd Floor Gallery 1 - 445m² (2.1m H) incorporating c 75 linear metres of wall space plus 22m² rear gallery incorporating c 10 linear metres of wall space; installation system: hammer and nail into plaster; lighting: professional track lighting system with adjustable lux plus standard room lighting; climate control: air-conditioned and heated; availability: partnership arrangement with gallery on special occasions only as the museum has a tight programme – the Director of museum normally assesses the suitability of work for joint presentations; other comments: power point next to every picture, sound system available

Håkon’s Hall was erected between 1247 and 1261 during the reign of King Håkon Håkonsson (Håkon IV). It was the largest and most imposing royal residency of the 13th century when Bergen was the political centre of Norway.

The tower was erected during the 1560s by Governor of Bergen Castle (Bergenhus) Erik Rosenkrantz, and served as a combined residence and fortified tower. Earlier structures existed, including Kin Magnus the Lawmender’s keep from about 1270 and Jørgen Hanssøn’s defences from about 1520. These were incorporated in the new tower by Rosenkrantz.
