Situated next to Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery in the War Memorial Gardens, Kirkcaldy Central Library was a established as a gift to the town in 1928 by linoleum baron John Nairn as part of a larger scheme to create a war memorial for the community following the First World War. It is easily reached by public transport being within easy walking distance of railway and bus stations
The largest and busiest library in Central Fife, Kirkcaldy Central Library offers: a broad range of fiction and non fiction books suitable for all tastes, including large print books and audio books; music CDs; a separate children's room with books to suit all reading ages and abilities; a local and family history section; Scottish and European Parliament material; a reference and information section; 15 public access PCs with free access to the Internet, Microsoft Office and E-mail software, and online information and learning tools; a range of daily and weekly newspapers in traditional and/or electronic format; public toilets; and photocopier for public use.
Kirkcaldy Central Library holds the main Family History and Local History Collection for Central Area Libraries. Census Records, Old Parish Records and old Newspapers can be consulted by members of the public, most of these are in Microfilm format.
There are areas for study and comfortable browsing.
The Library also hosts a range of activities for children, including a weekly storytime for 3-8 year olds, held on Wednesday afternoons; a monthly adult reading group; and regular IT taster sessions.
Kirkcaldy Central Library is part of the Scottish Parliament Partner Library Network.
