Accessibility: Paisley Central Library is a listed building and as there are restrictions on modifications which can be made to the building, both internally and externally, access is more limited; customers with limited mobility and wheelchair users should use museum side entrance, located beside the car park, which is open between 9am and 4.45pm Monday to Saturday and allows access to Lending Library, Learning Centre, Reference and Local Studies Libraries; regrettably there is no disabled access to Children's Library which is situated on first floor, however staff are happy to help with providing, and returning children's books to ground floor; PCs with enlarged keyboard, trackball, screenreader software, magnification equipment
Paisley Central Library is housed in a stunning category A listed building in Paisley's High Street. Opened in 1871, the original library was built with money donated by Peter Coats, a famous Paisley thread manufacturer. The building has continued to be developed in stages, but still contains many original features. Today it incorporates a Lending Library, Learning Centre, Children's Library, Reference Library and Local Studies Library.
The Lending Library offers a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books for all ages, plus audio books and large print books, language courses, music CDs, videos and DVDs for loan. The Learning Centre contains a suite of 28 PCs with networked access to the Internet, E-mail, CD-ROMs, word processing and online learning packages. The Children's Library offers story books for all ages, board books for babies, picture books, information books for homework, books on CD and tape, computers with access to the Internet, and toys and games. Varous special events are organised, especially during the school holidays.
The Reference Library houses a large collection of books, magazines, directories, maps, atlases, microform and electronic material covering a wide range of subjects, plus a range of daily and weekly newspapers and magazines.
The Local History Library houses an extensive collection of current and historical sources, and provides a wealth of information about Renfrewshire people, places and events from earliest times to the present day:
Paisley Central Library is part of the Scottish Parliament Partner Library Network.
