Estimates of religious affinity in Afghanistan vary. However, according to the online CIA World Factbook, 99 per cent of the Afghan population are Muslim - 80 per cent Sunni Muslim and 19 per cent Shi'a Muslim.

The remaining one per cent is made up largely of Hindus and Sikhs living in major cities such as Kabul, Kandahar and Jalalabad.
