Non government cultural funding
Việt Nam currently has four
national and three
regional cultural funds; in all cases the funds available are extremely small and allocated exclusively to local work.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is currently considering a proposal to establish a National Cultural Fund with support from the corporate sector, though it is as yet unclear to what extent this will operate independently of the Ministry.
Numerous international foundations are active in funding the Vietnamese cultural sector, notably the
Ford Foundation and the
Rockefeller Foundation, the focus being mainly on local capacity building and development.
There is also a small but growing number of corporate sponsors of cultural activity in Việt Nam, and whilst these are drawn mostly from the multinational sector there is an encouraging trend for Vietnamese companies such as Vietnam Airlines to want to associate themselves with the arts. However, no information is available regarding the amount currently generated from this source, and as yet a mechanism for generating significant and long-term support from sponsors has not been put in place.
