The Institute of History was established in 1960. It conducts research into Vietnamese history with a view to revealing the development processes of Vietnamese society in all their aspects and on that basis to identify useful lessons for the nation’s historical heritage which will contribute to the construction and defence of the country. The Institute houses an important library of 70,000 books which originated from the former library of the École Française d’extrême-orient (EFEO) after it closed in 1957. It also issues numerous publications including the bimonthly Nghiên cưu Lịch sử (Historical Studies) Review:
