Việt Nam National University, Hồ Chí Minh City was established in 1996 as part of the wider restructuring of the university system in Việt Nam with a mission to train qualified graduates and specialists to meet social needs, to undertake research and implement science and technology, and to carry out international exchange and co-operational activities with other universities in the region and the world at large. At the outset it consisted of eight member universities, one research institute and two specific centres. However, in 2001 Việt Nam National University, Hồ Chí Minh City was reorganised and now comprises three member universities (Hồ Chí Minh City University of Technology, Hồ Chí Minh City University of Natural Sciences and Hồ Chí Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities), the Faculty of Economics, the Research Institute for Environment and Natural Resources, the Centre for Information Technology Development, the Centre for Software Technology, the Centre for International Education, the Centre for Educational Testing and Evaluation (CETE), the Centre for National Defence Education and the Foreign Language Centre. The Việt Nam National University, Hồ Chí Minh City currently employs 2,322 staff (of which 1,583 are teaching staff) and has 57,000 full-time and part-time undergraduate students, including more than 2,000 postgraduate students. It offers more than 50 Bachelors degree programmes, 60 Masters degree programmes and 70 doctoral research programmes. With the vision of becoming the largest and most prestigious education and research institution in Việt Nam, the university is currently building a new, modern and well-equipped campus on an 643.7-hectare plot of land. The University is constantly expanding its academic programmes and facilities, aiming to maximise students’ potential and prepare them fully for the needs of a global economy in the 21st century.
