 Cần Thơ City was established as a centrally-governed city in November 2003 and is now one of five major municipalities which enjoy provincial status yet fall under the direct control of central government. It has a territory of almost 138,960 hectares of land and a population of 1,112 million people, principally Kinh (Việt), but also including Khmer, Chăm and Hoa (Chinese) ethnicities. Cần Thơ City comprises four urban districts (quận) - Ninh Kiều, Bình Thủy, Cái Răng and Ô Môn - and four rural districts (huyện) - Phong Điền, Cờ Đỏ, Vĩnh Thạnh and Thốt Nốt.
