Gaelic language programming commenced in 1923, and a Gaelic Department was set up within the BBC in 1935. The first dedicated Gaelic radio station, Radio nan Eilean, was established in Stornoway in 1979. In 1985 it merged with Radio na Gaidhealtachd (a Gaelic opt-out of Radio Highland) and became BBC Radio nan Gàidheal, with studios in both Inverness and Stornoway.BBC Radio nan Gàidheal broadcasts on 103.5-105 FM, and on DAB digital radio and digital satellite television.
