SSW was founded as the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in 1979. SSW was the first Sculpture workshop in Scotland and was originally developed to provide open access to facilities for artists who made large-scale sculptures.
The organisation built its reputation around a series of Sculpture Open exhibitions many of which were held in the grounds of Kildrummy Castle and in some cases toured internationally.
In 1996 a foundry was built on site and since then artists have come from all over the world to create works in iron, bronze aluminium and fire.
SSW is now focusing on supporting visual artists who work in any media. They have their own artistic programme and also accept artists and art school groups on self funded residencies.
They develop and run their own artistic programme in partnership with other UK organisations. In addition to this they welcome artists to apply for self funded residencies. Art college groups are also welcome.
They have a wood and metal workshop and artists foundry on site.
