Afghan Conservatory of Music
Professional musicians have traditionally been of the lowest class in Afghan society; in musical families skills were traditionally passed down from father to son until the introduction of music in schools by Ustaad Hussein during the 1950s.
Established in the 1960s, the
Afghan Conservatory of Music was Afghanistan’s first formal music training institution. It was closed during the Taliban era but has since reopened to long waiting lists of students. Until a purpose built centre is built the teachers and students must make do with the inconvenience of small classrooms and few instruments.
