Built by Ghiyasuddin Ghori (1157-1202 CE) during Ghorid times, there is little now left of the original workmanship. Restoration of the mosque began in the 1940s and the tile workshop in the mosque contributes to its constant upgrading. The sherbat bowl in one of the niches dates from the 14th century. The International Project for Preservation of Historical Monuments hopes to rebuild the tile work, insulate the roof, rehabilitate the park in the front, rebuild the moulding and paint and add electrical systems so that a sound system can be installed. The Friday Mosque part of a major restoration project focusing on the major heritage sites in Herat. There is a voluntary donation bank account where people can donate money for the preservation of their heritage and a small per cent of local customs duty is also allocated for the preservation of the monuments. The Aga Khan Foundation has also promised US$5 million, essentially for the safeguarding of Afghanistan's traditional habitat, with particular focus on the rehabilitation of the historical centre of Herat.
