Hadda
Hadda is located 10 kilometres south of Jalalabad and was first formally excavated by the Délégation Archéologique Française en Afghanistan (DAFA) in 1923. They found evidence of monasteries, more than 1,000 stupas and statues. Various sculptures were uncovered, mainly heads, including depictions of the Buddha, for this was a sacred place of pilgrimage between the 2nd and the 8th centuries. Hadda was one of the most important Buddhist sites which hosted pilgrims at its many temples. It was in Nangarhar that Buddha is said to have received his religious call. Unfortunately there is now little left to see.
