Established in 1988, the University of Herat now consists of nine faculties; Letters and Humanities, Medicine, Economics, Agriculture, Law and Social Sciences, Theology, Art, Education and Engineering. There are currently 2,000 students and 180 lecturers. The Art Department teaches painting, calligraphy and miniature painting and the Letters and Humanities Department produces a newspaper and magazine about culture. There are plans to build an academic hospital, library, laboratory and apartments on the large campus. The University needs all types of modern teaching materials and equipment and hopes to send some students and teachers on scholarships to study abroad.
