The principal national showcase for new Vietnamese painting and sculpture was established in 1975 and has been held every five years since then. The 2000 exhibition, held at Giảng Võ Exhibition Centre in Hà Nội, featured works by over 1,400 painters and sculptors from 59 provinces spanning three generations of artists (including 78 women and 15 ethnic minority artists) and ranging from the old guard involved in the struggle against colonialism to younger artists born since Reunification. Over 2,500 works were featured, including paintings in oil, gouache, Chinese ink and lacquer and statues in bronze, silver, jade and granite.
