Launched in 1993, this collaborative festival organised jointly by the five provinces of Điện Biên Phủ, Hòa Bình, Lai Châu, Lào Cai and Sơn La is held in a different province each year and showcases artists and arts organisations from the rich cultures and traditions of many different ethnic minority groups, including Thái, Mường, H'mông and Dao. Traditional folk items, rituals and festival activities are staged, along with beauty competitions, exhibitions of traditional costumes and crafts and sports. Professional arts troupes from all four provinces participate throughout the festival along with occasional guest troupes from Yunnan Province of southern China.
