Originally established in 1959 as the School for Cultural Cadres (Trường Cán bộ Văn hóa), this institution became the School of Professional Theory (Trường Lý luận Nghiệp vụ) just a year later. In 1977 the school became the College of Culture Professionals (Trường Cao đảng Nghiệp vụ Văn hóa) and in 1982 it was upgraded to become the Hà Nội University of Culture. It offers four-year Bachelors degree programmes and two-year MA programmes in Museum Studies, Ethnic Minority Culture, Cultural Tourism and Library and Information Studies, plus a range of in-service training courses for the culture and information management profession. In 2005 the University launched Viet Nam's first undergraduate programme in Culture Management, which has been developed as part of the Ford Foundation-funded project 'Arts Management Curriculum Development in a Market Economy Context'. The University currently has over 3,600 students (including in-service trainees) and over 330 academic staff, many of whom undertake scientific research in the social sciences and humanities. The Hà Nội University of Culture Library is open to researchers on request. The University directly oversees the operation of the Institute of Culture and the Nguyễn Du Writing School:
