The Hà Nội University of Industrial Fine Art finds its origins in the colonial-era National Elementary Crafts School (Trường Sơ cấp Quốc gia Mỹ nghệ), which was set up to train craftspersons in 1949. After independence its name changed several times, from Middle School of Fine Art (Trường Trung cấp Mỹ nghệ) in 1959 to Middle School of Industrial Fine Art (Trường Trung cấp Mỹ nghệ Công nghiệp) in 1962 and College of Industrial Fine Art (Trường Cao đẳng Mỹ thuật Công nghiệp) in 1965. In 1984 it became the University of Industrial Fine Art. The University offers five-year Bachelors degree programmes, four-year College Diploma programmes and two-year Masters degree programmes in Industrial Design (industrial design, toy design, glass design), Applied Graphic Arts (wood carving, graphics in printing, advertising and propaganda, decoration including weaving of carpets, rugs and brocade, and fashion design), Interior and Exterior Decoration (interior and exterior decoration, decorative sculpture and painted murals), Traditional Fine Art (lacquerware, pottery, metalwork and jewelry) and Fashion Design.
