The Institute of Archaeology was established in 1968. Its functions include: conducting research on relics and monuments which reflect human living environments with a view to reconstructing the cultural and social histories of human communities in the territories of Việt Nam; carrying out surveys, excavations and analyses of archaeological vestiges in the land and sea territories of Việt Nam; establishing an archaeological vestige databank on the basis of data collected from surveys and excavations; reconstructing the general picture as well as specific aspects of the material life of ethnic groups in Việt Nam through different historical periods; and conducting research on theoretical and methodological issues of archaeology while selectively accepting the archaeological achievements of the world. The Institute is currently co-ordinating a major archaeological excavation of the ancient Thăng Long (Hà Nội) Citadel site immediately to the west of the 18th century citadel, which was discovered in 2003 during ground breaking for the New National Assembly building. The Institute publishes the quarterly Khảo cổ học (Archaeology) Magazine:
