The Institute of Music Sound Archive houses more than 4,000 hours of recordings of popular and traditional music from throughout the country. It is responsible for the production of CDs, VCDs and videos featuring programmes of folk and traditional music of many ethnic groups. The Archive also holds thousands of books, scores and other documents relating to Vietnamese music. It is open to researchers on request to the Institute. A recent addition is the Databank on Folk Music and Traditional Performing Arts, opened in January 2004 following a three-year 10 billion VNĐ (cUS$640,000) project sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The Databank synthesises the Institute's archives with a user-friendly computer network, allowing visitors to research a song or piece of music from the point of view of its historical background, audio-visual components and music theory. Each entry is in both Vietnamese and English.
