Established as a performing company in April 1978, this national company moved into its own dedicated theatre space in 1990. The company focuses on three kinds of art - drama; music and singing; and dance. The 150-member company incorporates three performance arms – two drama troupes and one song and dance and mime troupe – which perform Vietnamese translations of modern plays and works by Vietnamese playwrights, plus non-spoken work such as song, dance and mime. The Youth Theatre has performed widely all over Việt Nam and in many other countries of the world. In recent years it has enjoyed great success with a number of productions, notably the comedy series Đời cười (Laughing Life, 1999), an acclaimed interpretation of Shakespeare's Macbeth (2003) and the topical drama Vũ Nữ Đêm Giao ('Bar Girls on New Year's Eve', 2003), all of which were presented to great acclaim in both Hà Nội and Hồ Chí Minh City. Special programmes are organised for children every year on International Children’s Day (1 June) and also during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The Youth Theatre is a member of ASSITEJ and functions as the ASSITEJ Centre of Việt Nam.
