Currently hosted by the Japan Federation of Composers (JFC), the Asian Composers Leagure was founded in 1973 by leading Asian composers. At the present time its membership is drawn from 12 countries and regions - Australia, Azerbaijan, China/Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Việt Nam. Every year ACL stages a Conference and Asian Contemporary Music Festival in one of its member countries, thereby providing an important platform for promising Asian composers from different cultural backgrounds to present their work, exchange ideas and build solidarity with their colleagues. The 25th Conference and Festival of 2005 will be held in Việt Nam. ACL administers numerous awards, including the ACL Young Composers Award for chamber works by composers under the age of 30 nominated by 10 country members, and the ACL Yoshiro Irino Memorial Prize (named after the late composer, Yoshiro Irino, one of the founders of the ACL), awarded for performed works by young composers from the host country.
