HN Opera House 1 (Tim Doling)
Built between 1901 and 1911 to a French design based on that of the Paris Opera, this beautiful historic venue was extensively renovated and recommissioned in 1997. The original architecture of the three-storey theatre has remained; ornate decorative features on the ceiling, arches, walls and doors have been renewed and the stage itself has been equipped with state-of-the art technical equipment to suit a variety of performance types ranging from orchestral concerts to ballet, opera and traditional theatre.

Type of venue: opera house; main use: orchestral concerts, ballet, opera and theatre; seating: 616 seats total, comprising 334 stalls, 151 lower balcony (including 2 boxes containing 3 seats each) and 131 upper balcony; proscenium opening: 9m W x 9m H; performing area: 9m W x 17m D x 17m H to grid, flat stage floor suitable for dance, stage floor incorporates a network of 90 traps, each 1.5m x 1.5m; forestage: 1.5m D fixed apron plus 2 electric orchestra lifts 1.24m D and 3.1m D respectively, facilitating either a max 5.85m D apron stage or an orchestra pit with max 2.25m drop accommodating 25 musicians; wing spaces: 5m W SR, 4.5m W SL; suspension equipment: 8 electric lines and 36 hand lines; soft hangings: dedicated house curtain, black and maroon tabs, legs and borders, cyclorama; lighting: no installed equipment (may be hired in on request); sound: Soundcraft Spirit 32-channel mixer, Siemens power amplifiers, EAW speakers; stage equipment: Steinway D concert grand piano, 2 Yamaha baby grand pianos, concert risers, full orchestra shell for orchestral and chamber music concerts, smoke machine; backstage: 18 dressing rooms (including 6 principals’ rooms), orchestral room and various additional areas accommodating 70 persons total; climate control: air-conditioning; availability: by arrangement only
Other Facilities
Rehearsal Room and Rear Stage Workshop backstage, plus various front-of house facilities including the historic 125 square metre Mirror Room (the original mirrors of which still retain bullet holes from the French War in 1946) and front balcony
