The Việt Nam Drama Theatre was established in 1954 as the National Drama Company (Đoàn kịch Trung Ương). Since that time the company has dedicated itself to discovering and developing a national identity and aesthetic for modern Vietnamese drama, integrating elements from traditional Vietnamese chèo and tuồng conventions with the modern influences of Stanislavsky, Brecht and Artaud. Today the 100-member national company includes many People’s Artists (Nghệ sĩ Nhân dân, NSND) and Excellent Artists (Nghệ sĩ Ưu tú, NSƯT) and has toured extensively overseas, performing works by acclaimed Vietnamese playwrights using surtitling and simultaneous interpretation. Most recently the company has participated in the Việt Nam-America Theatre Exchange (VATE), a collaborative project with Pacific University in Oregon, USA, funded primarily by the Ford Foundation. This project culminated in November-December 2000 with a bilingual, bicultural production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, premiered in Hà Nội and also presented in Hải Phòng, Đà Nẵng, Huế and Hồ Chí Minh City. The company headquarters are located in a lane behind the Hà Nội Opera House and incorporate a small theatre:
