The Council for National Costumes is an official, advisory institution which aims to document and provide information about various Norwegian folk-dress traditions, and to ensure the stylistic authenticity of bunads (collective word for national costumes) manufactured throughout the country. The institution has an extensive archive with about 50,000 registrations of old garments used as part of the different folk dresses. There are also other archives and collection displays featuring ‘bunads’ and folk-dresses from all districts of Norway. The Council is open for public enquiries.
