The Norwegian State Archives system (Arkivverket) consists of the National Archives (riksarkivet), covering the central administrative institutions, and eight regional state archives (statsarkiv), covering the local branches of the state administration. The collection of the National Archives dates back to the Middle Ages and covers the union with Denmark up to 1814. The newer archives come from ministries and other central administrative offices, as well as the Supreme High Court. The regional state archives contain documents from vicars, judges and other local dignitaries, such as church books, probate records and mortgage registers. For details see regional entries:
