The Directorate for Cultural Heritage was founded in 1912, and it is responsible for the amassed cultural heritage sites and buildings in Norway. Main areas of responsibility are historic buildings and sites, historic vessels and maritime archeology. The directorate holds the largest archive on cultural heritage in the country and a special library for cultural heritage, for details see Archive and Library of the Directorate for Cultural Heritage .
