Scots both ancient and modern have mingled to create what the author William McIlvanney has affectionately called ‘a mongrel nation’, from its long-ago unification out of Picts and Celts, Angles and Britons, to the ‘new Scots’ in urban and rural communities throughout the country, whose family trees originate in Africa, Asia or eastern Europe.
