The University of Abertay was founded in 1888 as the Dundee Technical Institute in 1888 and became a centrally funded institution with full degree-awarding powers (including research degrees) from the 1970s onwards. It was recognised as an 'industrial university' by the Scottish Office as early as 1902, but only allowed to use formal university title in 1994. Abertay University offers world-leading courses in computer arts and computer games technology.
