During the 9th century Mỹ Sơn was briefly supplanted by Đồng Dương as the centre of Chăm religious and intellectual life when King Indravarman II constructed a large Buddhist monastery here. Đồng Dương also served as the capital of Champa until around 1000, when the capital was moved south to Đồ Bàn near Quy Nhơn. The site originally comprised three major complexes extending over a distance of 1,300 metres in an east-west direction, featuring temple-tower architecture categorised as representing the eponymous Đồng Dương style. Sadly, due to the devastation wrought by the French and American wars, only the entrance to one of the towers now remains standing, surrounded by the shattered foundations of other buildings. Many important statues have been found at the site; most of these are now on display in the Chăm Sculpture Museum in Đà Nẵng. However, the famous bronze Buddhist statue recovered from Đồng Dương is currently housed at the Việt Nam History Museum, Hồ Chí Minh City.
