Conclusion
In conclusion, it became quite evident early on that the musicians residing in Kabul needed greater care and more direct personal contact than had originally been thought. Considering the recent history and upheaval in Afghanistan, in early 2003 there was clearly not an adequate or affordable communications infrastructure to facilitate the co-ordination of a tour in the UK directly with the musicians. This, combined with the obvious lack of international travel experience and general savvy of the artists, made the presence of a field consultant in-country an absolute must to forward the project and meet specific deadlines for a timely arrival and successful tour. Visiting Arts’ Afghanistan Cultural Profile will thus be a vital information tool for international cultural practitioners as it will help them to form links with co-ordinators on the ground in Afghanistan who can assist in the realisation of collaborative projects.
