OVERVIEW:
Mohammad Ali Brushna, harmonium maker
Mohammad Ali Brushna (Linda Mazur)
Street address: Kabul Shir Bazaar, Kharabat, Kabul (no phone)
Ustaad (Master) Mohammad Ali Brushna returned to Kabul in the summer of 2002, although he knew it would be years before he would have many customers. The economic climate for instruments is bleak at the moment, but this is his childhood home and his land. He knows of just four Afghan harmonium makers - Ustaad Ayub, who is currently training his son in Kabul’s Macroyan District; Ustaad Farid in Hindustan, India; Ustaad Sharif in Pakistan; and himself. The metal parts are imported from India, but they were previously made in Kabul. It takes one month to make a harmonium and everything is hand made. Brushna is a carpenter, carver, technician and painter. Most harmoniums are made for students and for musicians who play at weddings.
