Music under the Soviet and Taliban regimes
By 1978 radio had become a political tool, although music programmes were still broadcast. Russian music was transmitted after 1979 and underground cassettes of songs of rebellion kept the music industry afloat. However, with the collapse of the Soviet regime musicians had to flee, since during the ensuing civil war there were fewer and fewer contracts. Music was still played at celebrations and rarely at times of mourning, but there were few celebrations. Then in the mid 1990s music was outlawed completely by the Taliban and musicians were imprisoned.
