Music in Kabul:
Ministry of Information and Culture Music Department
The Ministry of Information and Culture runs its own Music Department, which seems rather more active than the radio station. It hosts four music ensembles: a regional group from Logar, a Sufi music group, a mixed eastern-western group, and an Afghan pop music group. My stay in Kabul coincided with the Goethe-Institut sending the electro-rock group Ata Tak from Dusseldorf to Kabul for six weeks. They brought with them highly sophisticated hard drive recording equipment, a less sophisticated 4-track recorder, new electric and bass guitars, amplifiers and a PA system. They spent their time training young Afghans in the use of the recording equipment, and in performance technique. There is no doubt that there is a tremendous interest on the part of some young Afghans in modern western popular music.
