Since February 2000 an agency of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications known as the Việt Nam Internet Network Information Centre (VNNIC) has been afforded responsibility for managing, allocating, supervising and promoting the use of Internet domain names, addresses and autonomous system numbers (ASNs) in Việt Nam.

According to the VNNIC, by mid 2004 around 6,000 Vietnamese domain names had been registered, 80 per cent of them acquired by companies.
