Current and potential usage
While Internet usage in Việt Nam remains low in comparison with that of other Asian nations, connectivity has increased rapidly over the past few years. According to figures released in 2004, Việt Nam had over four million Internet users, of which an estimated 900,000 were Internet subscribers - 62.88 per cent of the latter were customers of VDC, 23.2 per cent customers of FPT, 5.54 per cent customers of Netnam, 4.84 per cent customers of Saigon Postel, 1.41 per cent customers of Viettel and 0.14 per cent customers of VDC subsidiary Hà Nội Telecom.
At the time of writing the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has embarked on an ambitious IT imperative by establishing a subsidised software park for start-up companies at Quang Trung Software City, about 30 minutes from downtown Hồ Chí Minh City. Their dedicated service lines allow faster access time, while rates are reduced to serve start-up companies better. The Ministry has also drawn up incentives to encourage domestic enterprises to introduce information technology in production and business management, with a view to advancing Việt Nam's IT infrastructure to match that of the advanced South East Asian countries.
