Another important milestone in the development of Viet Nam's web presence was the adoption on 24 September 2001 of TCVN 6909:2001, based on Unicode, as the new national standard for Vietnamese 16-bit character encoding. Since that time the majority of Vietnamese websites have switched to Unicode with a view to ensuring that readers anywhere in the world may view the Vietnamese font correctly in their browsers without having to download a special font.
