Four dedicated librarianship training programmes are currently offered in Việt Nam - four-year Bachelors and two-year Masters degree programmes at the Hà Nội University of Culture and at the Faculty of Librarianship and Information Studies of Hồ Chí Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities; and three-year College Diploma courses at the Hồ Chí Minh City College of Culture and the Hồ Chí Minh City College of Culture and Arts respectively.

Around 30 per cent of Việt Nam’s Secondary schools of culture and arts also offer basic librarianship courses with a view to training staff to work in local (district and commune) libraries and reading rooms.

Staff of Việt Nam’s librarianship training institutions recognise the shortcomings of their largely theory-based syllabuses in equipping librarianship students to meet the needs of modern library users and are keen to collaborate with foreign librarianship schools, colleges and agencies with a view to curriculum development, particularly in the areas of IT and contemporary library management training.
